Displaying elegant nineteenth-century austerity, to which the “800 Festival” held every year in August is dedicated, Saludecio stands out for its cultural vocation and its capacity to experiment in an undoubtedly favourable context in environmental and historical-architectural terms.
Surrounded by a gentle and elongated landscape, with a centre where refined palaces and important sacred buildings alternate with the simplest village houses, Saludecio has been appreciated since ancient times for its hilly morphology: starting from ‘200 the Malatesta family made it one of their defensive properties for three centuries, due to the conflict with the Montefeltro family, but also a productive property.
Over time, this village has maintained its leading role in the area, with powerful families who built prestigious palaces and churches, and intellectuals and artists of great fame: a testimony to the activity of Guido Cagnacci –who left works of inestimable value here–and the presence of the Blessed Amato Ronconi, who lived in the 13th century, protector of Saludecio, to whom the Sanctuary and Museum are dedicated.
The city’s willingness to pave the way for renewed hospitality emerges from the development of events such as “Saluserbe” (Spices and Herbs fair) in the sphere of which the Italian Garden in the Porta Montanara area was also born, the “Ottocento Festival” and the painting of murals on house walls on the occasion of the Festival itself enabling Saludecio to become part of the “Città dei muri dipinti” (“Cities of painted walls”).
