It is the town of reference in the Conca Valley and its centre for trade and services. This has always been its vocation, manifested since ancient times through fairs, among which the “Fiera di San Gregorio” one of the most important in Romagna which celebrates the arrival of spring in March.
Morciano became a point of reference in the Middle Ages thanks to the Abbey of San Gregorio, the monastery founded by San Pier Damiani in 1061, around which the first important markets developed, which were then moved to the village built on the hill that rises above the Conca river.
For centuries a rural castle in defense of the inhabited village and a collection centre for local products, the construction of a bridge over the Conca in 1870 endorsed its linking role between the Montefeltro, Valconca and the Rimini area which consolidated its strategic importance, transforming its agricultural economy into an economy based on the tertiary sector. A large pasta factory was born, a silk mill and a wool factory; the rest was carried out through a demographic increase due to the depopulation of the hills.
Walking through its centre you can still perceive a nineteenth-century atmosphere, with the distinguishing urban rigour and architectural severity of the period between the two centuries.
This is where the Centro Dantesco “S. Gregorio in Conca”, created to deepen the knowledge and dissemination of the life and works of Dante Alighieri has its headquarters.
